I'm Alex.
A 27 year old stay at home mom in CT.
Since my first son was born (even before?) I knew I wanted to homeschool. My reasons are varied: I want them to be safe, I want them to enjoy learning, I want them to be creative... and also I'm selfish. I want to be the one who gets to see them light up with knew knowledge. I want more than just their first 5 years, and evening and weekends after that until they eventually leave me.
The boys are still younger than "school age" but we have been learning at every opportunity we can find.
I am struggling against my desire to be "Pinterest Perfect," and to keep up with all the wonderful bloggers I have discovered as a homeschooler… but my nature is to be much more relaxed than that. And right now, that is what works best. So I am going to go ahead and call us "Unschoolers." There was a time that I cringed at the word; considered it a cop-out. But now, I embrace it!
Of course in the world of Facebook groups and internet trolls I am not embraced so openly into the Unschool community. So I will point out that I am in no way a "Radical Unschooler," as I have heard it called.
When I consider us unschoolers, I mean simply that we follow no purchased curriculum. As hard as I tried to establish our own homemade curriculum, that wasn't for us either. We are now as-we-go, "what do you want to learn today," "hey! look at that" type learners.
I love your writing ideas. I am following your blog from last month. you are superb
